Weather Affects Your Appetite - How It Affects Your Food Choices

Weather affects your appetite in so many ways. You have probably heard about the "fight or flight" reaction that your body has when the weather is bad. When the weather is bad, you might feel hungrier and have a much lower appetite than usual. The reason for this is because it is harder to satisfy the urge to eat when there is a lot of wind or rain outside.

The main culprit in your battle against your craving for comfort foods is your stomach. During periods of good weather, your body's natural appetite suppressant hormones kick into gear. This can make you crave more foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugar. If you want to curb your cravings, keep some foods on hand that are high in fiber, like oatmeal.

If your weather is bad, your blood sugar will also be lower than normal. If you are eating snacks throughout the day, you should choose foods with a low Glycemic Index (GI). These include oats, which have a low GI. These oats are higher in fiber and lower in carbohydrates. Other foods that have a low GI are apples, bananas, and pears. These foods help curb your appetite and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

If you eat high-protein meals, your appetite will be even more sensitive to changes in the weather. You will be more likely to eat at least one snack per meal, as opposed to several smaller meals during good weather. Snacking often makes us hungry and leads to overeating. If your meals are high in protein and low in carbohydrates, you will feel fuller for a longer period of time. This helps curb your desire for food when the weather is bad.

If you find that you are hungry even when there is a lot of cloud cover overhead, your body is likely trying to tell you that it is time to eat. To combat this, eat several small meals throughout the day. Eating larger meals will make you feel full for a shorter period of time, which causes you to feel hungry again soon. By eating small frequent meals, your body tells you that you are full and you do not want to over-ate when the weather is bad.

High-fiber foods help to keep you feeling full for a longer period of time, which helps to curb your appetite as well. Your digestive system will not be working overtime digesting food because it is unable to digest it properly when it is surrounded by stool. Fiber slows down the digestion of food, which causes it to stay longer in your colon. This is the reason why people who eat a lot of fiber-rich foods rarely develop gassiness or exhaustion after eating a large amount of food.

Low-fat and low-sugar foods are also good choices when it comes to keeping your stomach full. Appetizers should be made with foods high in fiber and low in fat. Snacks can consist of watermelon, carrot slices, grapefruit, and applesauce. These snacks will not only help you feel full, but they will also keep your energy levels up for the next meal that you eat. If you snack between meals you will not feel hungry as long.

When it comes to eating meals, your appetite should not be affected by the weather. Just because you are eating meals at a restaurant does not mean that you have to let your appetite to get out of control. There are plenty of ways that you can still satisfy your appetite and keep it low when the weather outside is poor.
